The First Lady of Television
May 8, 2008 by Megan
Oprah has coined Barbara Walters as “The First Lady of Television” and I would have to agree. Barbara was interviewed by Oprah this week as she began her media tour to promote her new memoir Audition. Audition tells the life of Barbara Walters and includes details on her three marriages, her two-year affair with a US Senator (who happened to be black) and her feelings on Star Jones and Rosie O’Donnell. It is filled to the brim with juicy information and the perfect gift for Mother’s Day.
Audition refers to the act of always proving that you are ready/able to be something better. Women are constantly auditioning for a better career or a coveted promotion, auditioning to be a better mother or a better wife. Women are always competing (usually with themselves) and it was quite surprising to hear that the great Barbara Walters did that for years as well.
The First Lady of Television was nothing but poised and kind when she talked about Star Jones and Rosie O’Donnell. She gave credit to both ladies for helping contribute to The View and was understanding about the ordeals that required them both to leave the show.
When Oprah asked Barbara about what she now knew to be true Barbara replied “That you have to be kind to people….which is why I will no longer be a good interviewer. I’ve gone soft”. Soft or not, this lady has made a legendary impact on the world of television and I for one am looking forward to this book.
